Dublin to Belfast Removals
Professional removals between Dublin and Belfast — family-run since 1982.
Moving from Dublin to Belfast is one of our shorter long-distance routes and one of the easiest practically — the M1 runs almost the whole way, there’s no hard border, and personal-effects removals don’t require customs declarations. J Hanway has been moving Dublin households north to Belfast for decades: career moves to the tech and finance sector, political/journalism moves, families heading back to the north.
The Dublin to Belfast Route
M50 → M1 northbound, 167 km, about 2 hours empty and 2.5 hours loaded. We cross the border at Newry — no stop, no paperwork for personal effects. Belfast city arrivals typically happen early afternoon.
The only logistical wrinkle is currency and tolls: the M1 in the Republic has toll sections, none on the Northern Ireland side. We quote in euro and absorb all tolls and fuel regardless of jurisdiction.
Dublin-to-Belfast Customers
Tech sector career moves. Belfast has a growing tech and fintech base, and Dublin workers making the switch typically move quickly — often with 2–3 weeks’ notice. Usually apartments or small houses.
Academic relocations. Queen’s University staff and postgrads. The academic calendar creates predictable August/September volume.
Families moving to Northern Ireland for schools, work, or returning home. Three- to five-bedroom houses. Typically longer notice and full pack-up.
What the Move Looks Like
Early Dublin load. 7–8 am start at the Dublin address. Loading a typical three-bed with packing already complete takes 2–3 hours.
Direct M1 run. We’re on the M1 northbound by late morning, cross the border at Newry around midday, arriving in Belfast between 1 and 2 pm.
Afternoon Belfast unload. Unload, place furniture, reassemble, walk-through. Most three- and four-bedroom moves finish the same day, well before evening.

Why Choose J Hanway for Dublin-Belfast Moves
The border is a non-issue for us. We’ve been doing this route since well before and after Brexit. Personal removals don’t need customs declarations, and we handle any high-value item paperwork ourselves.
Single-day service. The M1 makes this one of our quickest long-distance routes. No reason to pad the quote with an overnight.
Dublin specialists. Our team knows the Dublin-end loading better than anyone — which matters because the hard part of a Dublin-Belfast move is usually the Dublin pickup, not the Belfast delivery.
